2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My group’s thriller is mainly dominated by the male gender. The main character is male; therefore the male audience may be more capable of connecting with the main character and enjoying the film more than females. To add to this, the only female featured in our thriller is found dead. The common stereotype is that woman are glamorous and sophisticated. In our thriller the woman is wearing a not so glamorous costume; this challenges this stereotype and suggests that not all women are glamorous and sophisticated. In ‘Once Upon a Time inAmerica ’ Eve is shown wearing glamorous clothes, linked to the classic femme fatale of the thriller genre. The woman in our thriller is a complete contrast.

The enigmatic figures in our thriller are all males. The common stereotype is that the male gender is more dominant and powerful. The enigmatic figures in our thriller are shown to be in power, and have full control of the boy and mother’s fate, suggesting dominance and authority. As shown in the opening sequence of ‘Once Upon a Time in America ’ the mobsters also have complete control over Eve’s fate, which is also shown in our thriller. The use of three mobsters emphasises how outnumbered and powerless Eve is. A common convention of the thriller genre is that the death of somebody else often effects the main character, often male. Male characters are seen to be more dominant in the thriller genre, for example, in 'Once Upon a Time in America' the three mobsters are in total control over Eve's fate. Also in 'Essex Boys' Billy and Jason are the main focus for the film. Furthermore, in 'The Third Man' the emphasis is more focused on Holly and Harry, than Anna, although she does play a big role in connecting with the female audience. Despite this there are films like 'Thelma and Louise' and 'Heavenly Creatures' which are dominated by females.
The location, in which we shot the films, is clearly shown as a mid-priced, large and ordinary house, linking to the house of the Cody family in Animal Kingdom. Because of this, the house could be associated with a middle class family, like in Animal Kingdom, and is also backed up by the normal white t-shirt and blue striped pyjama bottoms, worn by the main character in our thriller.
The site www.filmsite.org, suggests that the primary moods of the classic film noir are melancholy, alienation, pessimism, corruption and many more. My group's thriller taps into those moods, whilst mixing in problems with contemporary Britain. Our thriller represents the corruption of present day Britain, and reflects the pessimism and alienation caused by the effects of the recession and the cuts in public spending, and how this is effecting not only the younger generation but also the older generation. This is shown through the corruption of the enigmatic figures featured in our thriller, and the alienation of the main character Jonathon.
Reflecting proficient understanding of some aspects of representation.
ReplyDeleteYou need to be clear that you are discussing gender stereotypes in thriller films not in general.
I have posted the following onto Will's blog:
Representation of gender: You have used a traditional representation of women in thriller films in that the female in your film is a victim and that the action will revolve around the young male character. Will you need to reference far more research to illustrate you understand the domination of male characters in film, particularly thrillers and action and scifi thrillers.
You have mentioned Once Upon a Time in America but you need to make more of Eve's brutal murder by three corrupt police officers and that the narrative focuses on strong male characters and betrayal.
You could also reference Marion Crane in Psycho in that she is deviant and murdered less than half way through the film. This was unprecedented at the time the film was made because Hitchcock marketed the film as being about a young woman on the run! Thus the focus of the film is on Norman Bates.
The Third Man - Anna is not the centre of the action - the film is mainly about Holly Martins and Harry Lime.
Animal Kingdom - the death of Josh's girlfriend and the minor role she plays in the film.
Pulp Fiction, Mia is a classy junkie but the action of the film focuses on Jules and Vince. Reservoir Dogs is all about 5 males. But Jackie Brown and the Kill Bill films break Tarantino's mould and the generic blueprint.

Primary Characteristics and Conventions of Film "Noir: Themes and Styles
The primary moods of classic film noir were melancholy, alienation, bleakness, disillusionment, disenchantment, pessimism, ambiguity, moral corruption, evil, guilt, desperation and paranoia. "
You could thus discuss the representation of contemporary Britain in your film is bleak and reflects the pessimism and gloom caused by the recession and the brutal cuts in public spending by the coalition and the effect this is having on young people who are searching for work.
Re your comments about the epresentation of social class, this is reflected in the well appointed British Victorian terraced house. A hall entrance terraced house is expensive believe me so your location places your main character as middle class. The mystery is what was his mother into or has the boy been mixing with the wrong people??? Of course the mother could be into drugs or borrowed money from a loan shark that she can't =pay back!
